On Rose Monday, our investigators were active in Neuss to examine a suspicion of infidelity. The client lived with her husband, the subject of the investigation, in the Upper Bavarian city of Ingolstadt and was therefore too far away to verify whether her spouse would indeed – as he claimed – attend business appointments in Cologne on that day. Although our client had not harboured any specific suspicion despite her husband’s numerous recent trips to the Rhineland, business appointments on Rose Monday in Cologne? On the unofficially most important holiday for the people of the cathedral city, when business activity comes largely to a standstill? That did raise her suspicions. The hotel at which her husband was supposedly staying was located near a branch of his employer in the western part of Düsseldorf, not far from Neuss, and so the Ingolstadt resident commissioned our detective agency for Neuss to conduct surveillance of her partner on Rose Monday.
After our investigators arrived at the hotel well ahead of time, both began close reconnaissance and the search for the subject vehicle. However, the vehicle could be found neither in the hotel car park nor in the immediate vicinity, which made it highly questionable whether the subject was present at all. The client had no information regarding the further course of her husband’s day; he had been extremely secretive. Accordingly, the operation threatened to fail at this early stage, as it seemed unlikely that the investigators would even be able to identify the subject. In consultation with the client, our private investigators for Neuss decided to remain at the hotel for the time being in order to preserve the chance of identifying the husband should he enter or leave the premises.
In the meantime, the client was to make contact with the subject under a pretext, coached by our investigators, to find out where her husband was and what his plans for the day were. Although it took quite a while for him to respond via WhatsApp and he remained very evasive, he did at least send a photo that, thanks to the investigators’ local knowledge, provided a crucial clue. The picture showed a partial view of a dining table with a filled breakfast plate and, in the background, the interior of a restaurant. Since one of the two deployed investigators had attended several events at that particular establishment, he immediately recognised the location: it was the left-bank “Cafe del Sol”, only a few minutes’ drive from the hotel.
When the first operative of our private detective agency for Neuss turned into the street leading to Cafe del Sol, the subject vehicle approached from the opposite direction and turned into the very street from which Operative No. 2 had just come. He was informed immediately, turned his surveillance vehicle around, let the subject vehicle pass and then began following it, while continuously informing his colleague of the subject’s location and direction of travel. The drive lasted less than a quarter of an hour and ended at a block of flats in northern Neuss, where the subject vehicle was parked. The subject exited on the driver’s side and from the passenger seat emerged an unidentified woman in her late thirties. With her own house key, she entered the building, followed by our client’s husband.
Just over an hour later, the second investigator having already arrived at the target property, a taxi pulled up outside the building. Shortly thereafter, the suspected husband and his female companion left the property again – now, however, in bright carnival costumes – and climbed into the waiting taxi. The journey led through the city centre to Neuss-Holzheim, where the traditional Rose Monday parade starts at 11:11 each year. The pair alighted there and merged into the crowd of carnival revellers. As such an occurrence was to be expected during a Rose Monday surveillance, our detective team in Neuss had also brought along simple carnival costumes to slip on during traffic light stops, allowing both operatives to continue the surveillance unobtrusively.
The Rose Monday parade in Neuss is not quite as exuberant as in Düsseldorf or Cologne, but rather somewhat more family-oriented and orderly. This may be due mainly to the fact that the people of Neuss tend to “let loose” on Kappessonntag, the previous day. The subjects initially consumed just one small bottle of sparkling wine each. Most of the time, they stood side by side, singing, swaying and chatting. Crucial for our private investigators in Neuss: there were repeated displays of affection ranging from kisses on the cheek and nose to kisses on the mouth.
After the parade, the festivities continued in the multi-purpose hall in Neuss-Holzheim. There, over the course of several hours, the observed husband and his companion consumed a substantial quantity of what appeared to be alcoholic beverages, which was also reflected in their increasingly uninhibited behaviour. Among other things, the displays of affection became more frequent and more intense, and humorous calls such as “Get a room!” were heard. At one point, both even disappeared together into the ladies’ toilet, where our two male investigators could not follow. However, since the pair stayed inside for less than three minutes, it is unlikely that a sexual act took place. In any case, there was no longer any doubt about the subject’s extramarital activity. Our client merely wished to know whether her husband would also spend the night with the unknown woman. As both staggered back to the known property in northern Neuss that evening and did not leave again before the end of surveillance at midnight, this question could also be answered with a high degree of certainty. Furthermore, it had now become clear why the subject had not been found at the hotel that morning.
It is by no means a matter of course that definitive proof of marital infidelity can be obtained on the very first day of surveillance, but the public display of the extramarital relationship on Rose Monday provided excellent investigative conditions in this case. Speaking of client satisfaction is always difficult in circumstances such as these (marital infidelity), yet our Ingolstadt client nonetheless expressed her gratitude for the swift assistance provided by our private investigators in Neuss.
